About peace symbols
The peace sign ☮ (U+262E) was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 for the British nuclear-disarmament movement — the lines inside the circle are the semaphore flags for N and D. It entered Unicode as a text glyph, so it renders monochrome in any font. The victory hand ✌ is its hand-shaped cousin, and both read as calm without trying very hard.

Frequently asked questions
What is the history of the peace symbol?+
Gerald Holtom drew it in 1958 for a London-to-Aldermaston nuclear-disarmament march. The inner lines are the naval semaphore positions for the letters N and D — nuclear disarmament — inside a circle. It's in the public domain, which is why it's everywhere.
What's the difference between ☮ and ✌?+
☮ is the drawn peace sign — a circle with three lines — and ✌ is the victory/peace hand. ☮ reads more counterculture; ✌ reads more casual and friendly. Both are plain text.
Does ☮ render everywhere?+
Almost — it's been in Unicode since 1.1. A few platforms emoji-fy it into a colour badge; copy ☮︎ (with the text selector) from the grid if you want the guaranteed monochrome version.
